The Election of the Assistants General
Following the election of Sr. Mary Kristin Battles as Superior General on Tuesday, November 23, the sisters gathered in the dining room to congratulate her, take photos and enjoy some free time for rest of the morning. At 2:30 p.m., the capitulars got back to work.
Sr. M. Kristin described to them what she believes to be the important characteristics of sisters in leadership and then in particular what she hopes to find in the sisters who will serve on the next general leadership team.
The chapter members had already decided that they would elect five assistants from different geographic locations. Each geographical group was asked to propose names of sisters from their area to serve as general assistants.
Capitulars were able to schedule structured conversations regarding the assistant general beginning Tuesday afternoon. In order to give the capitulars the opportunity to speak with the nominees who were not at the chapter, individual phone and/or Internet appointments were set up with the nominees. Because of differences in time zones, these interviews took place through Wednesday afternoon. Every capitular who wished to, had the opportunity to speak to nominees in the chapter as well as outside. During this time period the capitulars had additional time for prayer and reflection.
On Wednesday afternoon, November 24, after the conversations had been completed and reflected upon, Sr. Christine decided that the capitulars were ready to vote for the assistants general. After prayer in the chapel before the exposed Blessed Sacrament, the capitulars returned to the chapter room at 5:30 p.m. and elected the following sisters as assistants general:
Asia-Oceana: Sr. Mary Sreeja Chittilappilly from Patna and Sr. Marie Emma Kim from Incheon
Brazil: Sr. Marie Alcídia Guareschi from Passo Fundo
Europe: Sr. Marie Julindis Melis from Coesfeld
USA: Sr. Mary Shauna Bankemper from Covington
We offer our congratulations and prayers of support to these sisters. If you would like to offer your personal congratulations, please click here.
